The woodruff is a native weed that is one of the spring plants. It grows preferentially in half-shady and shady locations ground covering, spreads over rhizomes, and blooms between April and June with fragrant, white blooms. The coumarin-containing leaves of the plant are often used for bowling, jellies and other desserts, for which they are harvested and dried before flowering. Even fresh woodruff can be used to aromatize drinks. However, Waldmeister should not be overdosed because of just that coumarin.
