There are a wide variety of species and even more cultivars of thyme, but what they all have in common is that they thrive in full sun and in poor, well-drained soil, and are hardy. Heavy soil or overwatering, or a damp growing environment, can lead to root problems.

Thyme is also very versatile as an ornamental plant in balcony planters and on the patio; Thymus praecox is an excellent ground-covering perennial.

The varieties of Thymus vulgaris have a slightly tart, very spicy aroma, whereas Thymus citriodorus has a fruity scent and flavor.
